Statement
My work presents a structured, yet random convergence of color, linearity and flowing form. I work with acrylic paint on wood and plastic panels. I also employ disparate materials in creating 2D and 3D works.
My work is ostensibly inspired by landscape, and implicit in my work is the impact that science has had upon our perception of nature. Of equal importance to my work is the experience of directly encountering the natural world, and the profound human need for an undivided relationship with nature.
Composition is very important and foundational to my work. I spend a great deal of time considering the form and the line, searching for a spatial beauty that is akin to a composed logic. I am captivated by the geometry of nature, its inherent underlying math as my works are informed by geometry. I am equally intrigued by the random, undefined and vulnerable aspects of nature, which are only seemingly antithetical to the geometric. It is the convergence of these unique forces that excites my work and creates a tension where the structured geometry encounters the undefined and the random. In my work I seek a place where love and logic manifest an harmonic alliance.
In an earlier series, Environments, I worked with quasi sculptural paintings employing acrylic paint on plastic panels - both clear and opaque, and I often incorporated plastic sheets, rods and beads and painted stones. These works often employed a linear element of flat color interacting with fields of modulated color, creating a tension between line and field, while the clear plastic elements adhered to the work behave like a lens, which magnify and distort the forms below.
My love for water is present throughout all of my work in its many permutations: waterfall, river, rain and ocean, although the tree/person is an important protagonist in my work as well.
The foundation of all of my work is drawing. My drawings are often figurative, as I have academically studied the figure for many years, and have worked in abstract figuration as well - they have a geometric, diagrammatic aspect as well but they are intended to reveal emotional states that pertain to our vulnerability, as we live in an objective reality that is deeply personal.
My recent work has focused on paint film - thinly applied. They are first imagined through careful drawings. The drawings become the literal foundation of the works as a monochromatic underpainting, a classical approach. Then I paint with extremely thin, attenuated layers of color.
I also make sculptural work. In a series titled Nests; I make sculptural works based upon similar notion of geometry coupled with random invention. These works are temporary and all made on site using wood, rope, plastic, paint and stone. These sculptures are intended to interact with the natural surroundings, which are as important a component as the work itself.
These works constitute a through line of decades, of roots, of neural nets, of stars, of trees, of water, of life.
